IndyCar team changes name
"We changed the name because Luczo Dragon Racing/de Ferran Motorsports was too long," co-owner Steve Luczo said. “The placement of Gil’s name first represents his vast accomplishments in the sport and his full time involvement as President of our race team. The Dragon represents Jay and me. Just ask Baron Davis who only refers to me as ‘Dragooon.’"
In 2006, Luczo and Penske founded Luczo Dragon Racing and entered the 2007 Indianapolis 500 and finished fifth. They ran six races in 2008 and became a full time team in 2009 with Raphael Matos as their driver. In February, Luczo and Penske announced their merger with de Ferran Motorsports.
Aside from the new team name and new logo, nothing else in the management structure changes. As team president and managing partner, de Ferran runs the day-to-day operation of the team with support from Luczo and Penske.
“All three of us play an important role in the overall business strategy of the team," de Ferran said. “We are in the beginning of our partnership, we are developing as a team and I would like to believe we have yet to achieve the full potential of our partnership."
The Indy 500 will be the first time de Ferran Dragon enters a race as a two-car operation with Matos and teammate Davey Hamilton as the drivers.
