"We've gone a long way to get back to where it all started," Rahal said referring to the CART years 1979 thru 1995. "But all in all, I think the series is right where it needs to be. So much money spent, so much pain, to end up right back where we all were. I don't want to say it was a wasted decade, but it certainly was a poor one for open-wheel racing." Bobby Rahal commenting on how open wheel racing was set back over 10 years while the IRL set out to destroy CART, only to come back to exactly everything CART was – turbocharged car (coming), ovals, road and street circuits, a lot of good foreign drivers, races in the USA, Canada and overseas. However, what is now lost are the 4 engine manufacturers CART had, and more sponsor money than even NASCAR had. One step forward and two steps back.
