Franchitti and Ganassi Get Surprise Visitor

McMurray flew to Indy to be in the photo with Franchitti so NASCAR could steal some of the IRL's thunder

After finishing second in the Coke 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway late Sunday night, 2010 Daytona 500 Champion Jamie McMurray flew to Indianapolis early Monday morning to congratulate his Ganassi teammate Dario Franchitti on his Indianapolis 500 win and to honor team owner, Chip Ganassi, for doing something that no other car owner in the history of auto racing had ever done; win the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 in the same season.

“I thought it was cool of Jamie to show up on Monday morning while we were out taking celebration photos," said Franchitti. “It shows what a class act Jamie is to have raced until almost midnight in the Coke 600 and then turn around and fly to Indianapolis the following morning. It was nice to celebrate our combined accomplishments together with Chip. It meant a lot to see him show up here."

"Honestly, my first thought was that I was happy for Chip as an owner, but I was really happier for him as my friend," said Jamie McMurray. “We certainly have been through a lot in our time together and coming back here and winning the 500 was certainly a high point for me. And now with Dario winning in Indianapolis, the accomplishment for Chip of winning both in the same season is truly amazing. I have gotten to know Dario pretty well since running together in Rolex 24 at Daytona and couldn’t be happier for him."

Both trophies were on hand to celebrate the moment – the Harley J. Earl trophy for the Daytona 500 winner and the Borg Warner given to the Indianapolis 500 winner.
