Sticky pedals force recall of ’07 Dodge Calibers worldwide

A bad batch of parts that triggered a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into sticky pedals has led to the recall of 34,600 2007 Dodge Calibers and 90 Jeep Compasses around the world.

The recall, confirmed Friday, includes about 25,300 Calibers sold in the United States and almost 5,600 in Canada — all equipped with an automatic transmission.

No accidents or injuries have been reported.

Sticky pedals have led to the recall of 2.3 million Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles in the United States.

While the affected pedals on the Chrysler Group LLC vehicles are from the same supplier with whom Toyota had problems, Indiana-based CTS Corp., the pedal designs are different.

Toyota worked with CTS to address its problem.

In Chrysler's case, the problem was traced to a bad batch of bushings affecting vehicles built on March 7 and May 19, 2006.

The initial investigation looked at more than 160,000 Chrysler vehicles, but the recall applies to fewer than 35,000 — of which a third are expected to have actually been affected.

Under certain conditions, some bushings can dislodge, and the accelerator pedal may not immediately return to the idle position.

"The potential issue is mechanical in nature," the automaker said in a statement, and was not related to Chrysler's design of the pedal nor electronics.
