IRL did best they could given situation
Yes, IndyCar stuck with Dallara for their new chassis and it looks like Honda will again be the only engine supplier, but given the economy, a sport destroyed by the split, and straddled with an ancient car, IndyCar made the right decision on Wednesday. By allowing multiple body packages on a standard rolling chassis the IRL got the best of both worlds – low cost with variety. If they had opened it up and approved multiple chassis manufacturers, costs would have skyrocketed – loss of economy of scale, and there would be an increased risk of a huge disparity between makes resulting in less competitive racing. We like the idea that the cars will look different from body kit to body kit, and if a team wants to completely change makes, it is just a $70K cost to buy another body kit instead of $500K to buy an entire car today. But not seeing or hearing a word from Michael Andretti, Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske speaks for itself – they cannot be happy because they supported the Delta Wing project, and we are told even funded a portion of its development.
