Danny Sullivan to act as Hockenheim steward

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has confirmed that Danny Sullivan, former Tyrrell pilot and winner of the 1985 Indianapolis 500, will be the racing driver in Race Control for the German Grand Prix this weekend.

With Nigel Mansell having taken up the position for his home race two weekends ago, Sullivan now becomes the first American driver to moderate a race in 2010.

Born in Louisville in 1950, Sullivan attended the Kentucky Military Institute before signing up for the Jim Russell Racing School. However, prior to his move into racing, Danny was also a New York taxi driver and even a lumberjack.

Winning at Indy for Penske in 1985, Sullivan’s sole season of F1 had come two years earlier, achieving a best finish of fifth for Benetton-sponsored Tyrrell at Monaco.
