Wilson to wear cast and brace

The X-rays were negative but Justin Wilson still had problems gripping the steering wheel during last weekend’s Izod IndyCar Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

As the series prepares for the next race, on Aug. 22 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Wilson will have a cast and a brace for his right thumb, which was injured in a qualifying-session crash with Ryan Briscoe. Wilson tore ligaments in the thumb during the initial contact with Briscoe.

Wilson had the thumb wrapped for the Honda Indy 200 last weekend, but couldn’t grasp the wheel as he is accustomed to. That likely didn’t help when he tried to make an evasive move to avoid hitting E.J. Viso during the race. That crash ended both of their races.

The Infineon race is IndyCar’s last of the season on a road or street course. The final four events of the year are on oval tracks.
