F1 fan starts grassroots F1 education in Austin

Watching sports at a bar on a weekend afternoon is nothing new in Austin.

But the several dozen sports fans who gathered at Cool River Cafe in Northwest Austin on Sunday afternoon were not into football or baseball. Far from it.

The bar and restaurant has become host of Austin's Formula One Grand Prix Watch Party, where a diverse set of automobile enthusiasts and racing fans gathered to watch the high-speed action and heart-stopping crashes of the Belgian Grand Prix. Although the race was televised on the Speed Network at 6 a.m., the Cool River crowd watched a recording during the afternoon.

The viewing party is held every other Sunday during racing season.

Organizer Michael Ferweda, CEO of Zinger Hardware, said the event started with a small group of fans. But organizers started contacting various car clubs in the Austin area, inviting their members to learn more about the sport that's poised to take up residence in Austin's backyard.
