GM exec predicts 60,000 Volt models built in ’12
Doug Parks, GM's global vehicle line executive for electric vehicles, said today GM will build "10,000 or 15,000" Volt models in 2011.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Business of Plugging In conference, Parks said GM could build up to 60,000 Volt models in 2012. In July, GM upped production capacity for 2012 from 30,000 to 45,000.
"Starting in '12, we'll be in this max rate of 60,000," Parks said. He confirmed GM "could" sell the maximum figure in 2012 — and could possibly go further than that.
GM is building the Volt at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
"We have the ability to increase volume and crank that up," Parks said, saying in the 2012-2013 time range GM could go further than 60,000 annual production. "We don't have any firm plans yet but we're flexible."
