Power eyes revenge in Surfers
Will Power won the pole the last time (2007) Champ Car raced in Surfers |
First place might be a goal too far, but Australian Will Power wants to earn the bragging rights among the IndyCar racing community at this weekend's Gold Coast 600.
Power is one of six IndyCar drivers among the 18 international pilots competing in the V8 Supercar event on the streets of Surfers Paradise.
And after narrowly missing out on this year's championship in the US, Power is hoping to at least take some solace from showing his colleagues how it's done in his home state of Queensland.
"Of course you know, I'd love to get one over all the IndyCar guys that are here," Power told AAP on Wednesday.
"It would be very funny if we ended up on the same spot on the track, give them a little bit of a shove." Power, who says he's coming to terms with the final race disappointment that saw him lose the IndyCar crown to Scotland's Dario Franchitti in Florida earlier this month, will drive at Surfers for Ford Performance Racing.
He'll be joined in the field by Penske Racing teammates Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe, while Franchitti, Alex Tagliani and Scott Dixon have also made the trip to south-east Queensland.
And the opportunity to return to Queensland after IndyCar ended their long association with Surfers Paradise in 2008 is an exciting one for the Toowoomba-born Power.
"I love coming here to race on the Gold Coast, one of my favorite tracks, and we don't have a race here any more so it's good to come home," he said. More at Stuff.co.nz/aap
