Will IndyCars be faster than F1 cars?
A reader asks, Dear AutoRacing1.com, In 2013 F1 will switch to an In-Line 4 cylinder which will rev up to 12,500 rpms and 650 horsepower while the Indy cars will have V6 engines that will rev up to 12,000 and 750 hp. So will the Indy Car replace F1 as the fastest open wheel races in the world? Al Fannell
Dear Al, An IndyCar is like a Sherman Tank, the heaviest open wheel car on the planet. So on road courses an F1 car will easily dust off an IndyCar. However, on 100% throttle ovals, once you get the large mass of an IndyCar moving, it would be able to reach a higher terminal velocity since it will have 100 more HP. However the IRL wants the cars to have less HP on ovals (talk is around 650) and if that is the case, the Sherman Tanks of open wheel racing will still be slower than an F1 car, assuming they are both running low downforce, low drag wings.
