Baltimore ALMS Grand Prix race gets TV deal

The inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix will get TV coverage on two major networks, thanks to a new deal struck by American Le Mans Series, ESPN and ABC.

Le Mans said it has reached a multi-year deal with the two networks, both owned by the Walt Disney Co., to broadcast its races, including the Baltimore races this September. The Le Mans race will be shown live on ABC.

Not only will the city get free PR on two major television networks, but the deal includes a two-hour documentary that will air on ABC on Sept. 11. ESPN3.com will also live stream coverage of the Labor Day weekend race.

Bob Dickinson, vice president of media and communications for Le Mans, said Baltimore was chosen for the documentary because of all the work involved in establishing the Grand Prix here.

“It’s a new race for us, and the documentary will showcase a lot of the behind-the-scenes work and spectacular setting of the Inner Harbor," Dickinson said Tuesday. “That makes [Baltimore] seem to be the perfect one to do it with."

Dickinson said the multi-platform coverage on television and online will be popular for viewers who can access a computer and can adjust the Internet coverage to fit their TV or projection screen.

The ABC race telecasts will receive an encore airing on ESPN2 as part of the new agreement. mdailyrecord.com

Meanwhile the Sunday IndyCar race will be essentially invisible on Versus.
