Mercedes-Benz has shown its SLS AMG E-Cell concept car at the Detroit Motor Show. This isn’t the big news though.
The big news is that Mercedes say it will enter production in a coupe of years.
The SLS AMG E-Cell will be powered by four, high revving, synchronous electric motors that can reach 12,000rpm. These electric motors will produce 525HP.
This will be enough to launch the SLS AMG E-Cell to 60 mph in just four seconds, nearly as quick as the normal cancer causing trade deficit destroying fossil fuel powered SLS.
The E-Cell will also have a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that features a modular design and a maximum electric load potential of 480kW. The battery can be recharged from a standard electricity outlet but it can also recharge itself by using its regenerative braking system.
Mercedes have positioned the electric motors as close to the wheels as possible and have paid special attention to the placement of the batteries throughout the chassis. Because of this, the SLS E-Cell has near perfect weight distribution, ensuring that it remains a thoroughbred sportscar.
The E-Cell will also get new front suspension, featuring a multi-link set-up and pushrod damper struts. The SLS AMG E-Cell may be green, but Mercedes are ensuring that it will not be dull in anyway.
