Kyle Busch tops final Phoenix Cup practice

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch was quickest in final Sprint Cup practice Friday at Phoenix International Raceway.

But it will be Busch’s brother, Kurt, who will qualify last for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 among the top-35 drivers Saturday afternoon.

This is the first weekend in Cup where qualifying order will be based on practice speeds, with each driver’s best lap in either practice determining qualifying spots, which will run from slowest to quickest among top-35 cars and then slowest to quickest for non-guaranteed cars.

If qualifying is rained out Saturday (there is a 30 percent chance of rain for qualifying at 3:40 p.m. ET), Kurt Busch would start on the pole as the order of the starting lineup would be determined by practice speed. Who actually gets in the field is based primarily on owners points and other criteria in the rule book.
