Number Of U.S. TV Homes Declines For First Time In 20 Years

The number of U.S. TV homes has dropped "for the first time in 20 years." Nielsen today will tell TV networks and advertisers that 96.7% of U.S. households own TV sets, down from 98.9% previously. One reason for the decline is poverty: Nielsen research indicates the new TV-less HHs "generally have incomes under $20,000." The other is that "young people who have grown up with laptops in their hands instead of remote controls are opting not to buy TV sets" and are instead "subsisting on a diet of television shows and movies from the Internet" N.Y.
