Karl Reindler & Steve Owen V8 Supercar crash and explosion at Barbagallo

UPDATE Some spectacular photos from the V8 Supercars accident from last weekend have appeared. Note the distance of the two cars between photos 1 and 2, its less then 5 meters (15 feet) between no sign of fire at all and the car of Reindler engulfed in flames.

05/01/11 V8 Supercar drivers Karl Reindler and Steve Owen were fortunate to escape serious injuries in a huge start line accident in race two at Barbagallo.

Reindler stalled his Brad Jones Racing Holden on the grid and was powerless to prevent Owen from plowing into the back of him at 90mph and causing his car to burst into flames.

The 37G accident left Reindler with superficial burns to his hands and face.

"I loaded the clutch up and it stalled," said Reindler. "I had my foot all the way down; I didn't even release the clutch. I couldn't get it going at all. There was nothing I could do.

"Before I knew it I saw flames inside the car. I guess I panicked and tried to get out as quick as I could. My body's fine, it's just my hands."

Owen walked away from the incident seemingly unscathed, but was later taken to hospital after complaining of abdominal soreness.
