Pirelli targets ‘faster’ tires for 2013

Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport in Valencia during the European Grand Prix weekend, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery discussed a range of proposals that are being considered in an attempt to improve the show still further after a successful return to the sport this season.

The performance of Pirelli's tires thus far has been viewed as a key element in the racing seen to date in 2011 but Hembery said there was still room for improvement.

“After Silverstone we will get together and show the teams a few things," he said. “Maybe we will increase the number of different tires; maybe we'll bring three compounds to a race, maybe with a total of six to choose from.

“I don't know yet. There are a lot of ideas."

As well as quicker tires to fit in with a change in F1 regulations in 2013, a 'super-sticky' qualifying tire could be developed which would be good for one quick lap.

“In the end for something like that, the decision is with the teams," Hembery added. “They might say no."
