Bartolotti wins 2nd pole

Mirko Bortolotti has taken his second pole position of the weekend at the Nurburgring today (Sunday), with a lap four tenths faster than his pole lap from yesterday. The Austro-Italian will line up alongside local driver Tobias Hegewald for today's race, the second of the meeting.

The drivers traded times in the early part of the session, with Thiemo Storz posting the fastest lap early on, ahead of Christopher Zanella, Bortolotti, Will Bratt and Jack Clarke. This initial action lasted until ten minutes into the session when, with no further improvements coming, the drivers all pitted.

Initially just a few of them resurfaced with less than half of the session remaining. Alex Brundle was one of the first out and he lowered the mark to 1:48.157s – faster than Bortolotti's race one pole position lap. Then Johannes Theobald went quicker still – into the 1:47s bracket.

Then Bortolotti and Hegewald took first and second places by a few hundredths. Bratt joined them in the top three, with only a few minutes left on the clock. As with yesterday's session, most of the drivers sat out the final seconds in the pits.

Fourth place on the grid will be occupied by another German driver, with Johannes Theobald's fine lap just two hundredths short of pole and his best ever qualifying position. Miki Monras will also occupy the third row and will certainly need to perform well later to prevent the pole position man from extending his championship lead.

Behind Mikkel Mac on row four and also hoping to do well, Zanella will be aiming to repeat his antics from the early laps yesterday, where he hauled himself up to second. However, he is sure to be challenged by Jack Clarke and Alex Brundle – the former aiming to build on his first podium of the year and the latter needing a good finish to stay in the title hunt.

Storz will start tenth and with less than half a second between him and pole, the race is sure to be a highly competitive affair.

Speaking after the qualifying session Bortolotti said: "I'm really, really happy with that result but I did make some silly mistakes. The track was similar conditions to yesterday but my new tyres were not as stable and I missed out some of my braking points. Traffic is always a problem, especially during the overboost session, as everyone is looking for space. I'm really looking forward to the race though."
