Jean-Eric Vergne wins again, takes point lead

Jean-Eric Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne recorded his second victory of the weekend at the Hungaroring on Sunday afternoon, moving four points ahead of pre-event championship leader Robert Wickens. The Frenchman made a strong start and immediately grabbed the lead, controlling the race from the offset. Post-race penalties promoted Albert Costa to second, while Adam Carroll scored his first podium finish in the category.

Sergio Canamasas got away cleanly his pole position grid slot, but failed hold Vergne back into Turn 1. Drama quickly ensued in the midfield, with André Negrão running into the back of Sten Pentus soon after the lights went out, sending both men out of the race. The Safety Car was quickly deployed as a result, with marshals clearing up debris that was scattered over the circuit during the incident.

Wickens was one of the first men to pit on Lap 5, marking the start of the crucial Race 2 pit-stop phase. It turned out to be the right choice when his rivals pitted, with the Canadian jumping up to third place ahead of Albert Costa and Adam Carroll. Vergne had a comfortable lead over Canamasas in second place as the race entered its final stages, with Wickens doing his best to hold onto a podium finish.

Penalties after the race saw Canamasas and Wickens pushed down the order, as the stewards decided to add ten seconds to their respective race times for rule infringements. Therefore, Canamasas drops to fourth ahead of Alexander Rossi and Brendon Hartley, while Wickens slots into seventh before Mikhail Aleshin. Frenchman Nathanael Berthon crossed the line in ninth, just ahead of compatriot Arthur Pic.
