Video: Indy Cars Test at NHMS
At speeds approaching 175 mph, IZOD IndyCar Series drivers Will Power and Pippa Mann tested at New Hampshire Motor Speedway today in preparations for the MoveThatBlock.com INDY 225 on Sunday, Aug. 14.
Will Power, driver of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Honda took his first laps around "The Magic Mile" today attempting to learn the ins-and-outs of racing a flat one-mile oval.
"The main goal of today is just getting some information for our engineers and for me to learn the track and get an idea of what I need to run around this place" said Power. "The track is quite similar to Milwaukee. All-in-all it is a short, flat track, which are usually pretty fun."
Power continues to be a championship contender once again in 2011 for Team Penske. So far this season he has earned three wins, four poles and six top-five finishes. He is currently second in the IZOD IndyCar Series' championship standings, just 20 points behind defending champion Dario Franchitti.
Pippa Mann will run her second of four IZOD IndyCar Series races for Team Rahal Letterman Lanigan behind the wheel of the No. 30 Dallara-Honda, when the series races into NHMS.
"I've actually had a great morning of testing," said Mann. "The big thing about this test is that this is my first time in an Indy car on a flat one-mile oval. I didn't get to race Milwaukee, but I did get to race in the Indianapolis 500."
She went on to joke, "it's a slightly different track from here, so we are working on getting me up to speed and then we start working on the handling of the car."
Mann was the first female to race in the World Series by Renault 3.5 Championship and in 2010 was the first female to earn a pole at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Firestone Indy Lights Series.
The IZOD IndyCar Series race is part of an action-packed season of speed at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Tickets are still available for the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 on Sunday, July 17, the MoveThatBlock.com INDY 225 on Sunday, Aug. 14 and the SYLVANIA 300 on Sunday, Sept. 25.
