Waltrip Racing hires former RCR competition director
A former crew chief for Ricky Craven, Dave Blaney and Jeff Burton, Miller has six career wins as a crew chief. As RCR competition director, he oversaw the turnaround from a 2009 season when no RCR driver made the Chase For The Sprint Cup to having all three drivers in the Chase in 2010.
Miller replaces Steve Hallam, who left MWR to join a team that races V-8 Supercars in Australia.
“This is the highest ranking role in our competition department and we needed a person with great knowledge of our sport, experience in managing highly competitive personnel, and a vast technical background," said team co-owner Michael Waltrip. “Scott is exactly all of those things. This is such an important hire for our organization.
“Scott is used to winning, and we expect a lot of each other. As owners, our job is to provide our teams the human and capital resources needed to be successful. This is another step in that maturing process."
Miller will manage all competition aspects, including design, manufacturing and engineering, as well as the technical relationship with Toyota Racing Development.
MWR has had two victories, both by David Reutimann, since starting a Cup program in 2007. None of its drivers have made the Chase. Martin Truex Jr. is currently 17th in points while Reutimann is 28th.
“Michael Waltrip and [co-owner] Rob Kauffman have presented me with a great opportunity to assist them in moving their organization to the next level," Miller said. “While the team is currently performing well, the ultimate goal is to become one of the elite teams in the sport, winning races and competing for championships.
“MWR appears to have assembled many of the necessary resources. It will be my responsibility to use them to their full potential." Scenedaily.com
