Marko clarifies Red Bull commitment to F1

Helmut Marko has moved to explain a number of rumors that Red Bull may be pulling out of Formula 1 in coming years. The Austrian energy drinks company has been part of the sport since 2005, after it bought out Jaguar Racing, and has now celebrated double title-winning triumphs for two consecutive seasons.

Despite the company’s immense success in recent years, reports have continued to suggest that Red Bull may not be remaining in F1 for a considerable amount of time.

“That’s not entirely true," company advisor and former driver Marko explained to the official F1 website. “There have been comments from Dietrich Mateschitz (owner of Red Bull parent company) that, should the framework requirements not apply, then there could be second thoughts. Formula 1 is a marketing tool for Red Bull, which means that we permanently evaluate our input and the output of our commitment.

“This equation has to be positive. If long-term success is there, then there is definitely no question at all; and if you look at the reality of the situation, we have long-term contracts with our engine supplier (Renault), with our sponsors and our staff."

When asked what the company is looking for from 2012, Marko replied:

“We want to defend both titles. But we are also aware that it will become even more difficult. The main ingredients have been in place for a long time, so why should 2012 be any different? You need a fast car, you need consistency and you need two drivers who can deliver."
