More famous names for Wheldon Memorial race

A number of international racing stars have confirmed their attendance for the Dan Wheldon Memorial Kart Race, which is to be staged in Milton Keynes next Monday. The Englishman tragically lost his lift in this year’s Las Vegas IndyCar finale.

Prior to his days in America, the Indianapolis 500 winner of 2005 and 2011 was a popular face on the UK racing circuit, having challenged the likes of Anthony Davidson and 2009 World Champion Jenson Button in go-karts.

Next Monday’s race – organized by sports car star Johnny Mowlem – will take place at the Daytona Milton Keynes karting centre, with professional drivers going up against Wheldon family members plus paying public guests and all funds going towards the Wheldons’ chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Society.

The following drivers are all confirmed to be taking part: Dario Franchitti, Jenson Button, Anthony Davidson, David Coulthard, Guy Smith, Jonny Kane, Rob Huff, James Hinchcliffe, Johnny Herbert, David Brabham, Marino Franchitti, Martin and Alex Brundle, Mike Conway, James Jakes, Adam Carroll, Chris Buncombe, Richard Dean, Steven Kane, Sam Hancock, Luke Hines, Marc Hynes, Nic Minassian, Jason Plato, James Rossiter, Peter Dumbreck, Richard Lyons, Sam Bird, Duncan Tappy, James Thompson, Tom Sisley, Ollie Hancock and Danny Watts.

On top of initial proceeds, a special ‘Cash for Penalties’ system will be introduced which allows any competitor to pay for penalties against rival teams; competitors will be able to purchase laps or black flags, all in the name of charity.
