Kovalainen may stay at Caterham if car improves

Heikki Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen says he will remain with Caterham in the near future if the Norfolk squad's on-track performance continues to improve. The Finn is yet to score a point since joining the team in 2010 and, despite admitting that the move was never going to be fruitful in the short-term, he has started to ponder his future beyond next season.

"It depends on the car's performance," Kovalainen told Turun Sanomat when asked if he will stay with Caterham after 2012. "I cannot give an exact probability of continuing in a percentage, but if we go higher up the order next season, with the average development continuing, then the percentage will be high. Otherwise, the percentage will be small."

Having driven for both Renault and McLaren during the early years of his F1 career, Kovalainen is hopeful that a winning car will be at his disposal again in the future.

"I believe so," the 30-year-old added. "However I don't know if it means with this team, or with another. The World Championship title is still my goal. Next year, it will not yet be possible to achieve, but after that it can be considered."
