Brazilian race-car driver charged with DUI manslaughter

According to the CBS affiliate in Miami, Brazilian race-car driver João Paulo Escudero Mauro, 20, has been charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and possession of cocaine after the car he was driving in the early hours of Jan. 19 struck and killed a 45-year old man in Miami Beach.

Miami.cbslocal.com reports that a police spokesman said that at 1:30 a.m., Mauro was driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV when he swerved into a parking lane at more than 60 mph; the posted speed-limit on the road is 30 mph.

“It did strike several parts of the curb before it jumped onto the sidewalk, striking a pedestrian," the spokesman said. According to reports, Russell Knudson was placing a bicycle onto the back of a car when Mauro's vehicle struck and killed him.
