Mercedes-Benz will cease production on Maybach 201
Mercedes-Benz will cease production on Maybach models in 2013. Sales of the uber-luxury car model have been lackluster in recent years. The end comes a few years after Maybach celebrated its centennial. The company was founded in 1909 by William Maybach, and is currently owned by Daimler AG.
The news was reported by AutoWeek. “Despite the plan to dump Maybach, both the existing 57 and 62 will be produced through to early 2013, at which point the fifth-generation S-class is due to be introduced. “There is no sense producing beyond this date, as there will no longer be any production synergies," said an Autoweek source familiar with Mercedes-Benz’s plans."
Mercedes-Benz revived the nameplate in 2002 and produced Maybach 57 and 62, but sales have been outpaced by Rolls-Royce and Bentley for super luxury sedans.
