Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed in the final 10 minutes of Sprint Cup practice Saturday, but he’ll have a familiar face joining him at the rear of the field Sunday for the Pure Michigan 400.
Earnhardt, who won at Michigan International Speedway in June, will start in the back along with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, whose team changed an engine earlier Saturday.
Johnson will give up the third starting spot while Earnhardt was supposed to start 22nd.
Earnhardt, who was 12th in the practice session, got loose in Turn 2, spun and nailed the wall with the left side of his car.
“We were making some changes on the car and got the car too loose and it just came out from under me in the corner." Earnhardt said. “It was a little bit of being too free and probably running harder than I should have been in practice. … We just jumped over the line there."
