Alonso: Rain would be better for Ferrari

Fernando Alonso says a wet race may offer Ferrari a better chance of victory in Belgium, with the Spaniard remaining cautious over his team's potential in dry conditions. Ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix, the double World Champion holds a 40-point lead over Red Bull's Mark Webber in the Drivers' standings.

"When your car is competitive and you are good on that weekend, maybe a dry race is better because it is more consistent," he explained during Thursday's Shell media gathering.

"If you are quick you are 99 percent on the podium, which would be a good result for us already. If you are not competitive, I am sure wet conditions are a help because you can do more, like choose the right tire at the right moment.

"I don't know at the moment, but looking at this year's championship, maybe a wet race is better for us. At the same time, wet means more risk. There is aquaplaning, white lines, curbs, so a wet race can help you a lot and take a lot (from you) as well."

Despite his hopes of fighting for victory this weekend, Alonso admits that scoring points in every race is vital as the championship approaches its final flyaway stage.

"I think with the championship you must finish races, you must always score points and a wet race means more risk," he added. "But, it is more of a risk for everybody."
