HRT steering issued caused scary accident in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was marred by a frightening accident for the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. The German, fighting from the back of the field after Lap 1 contact with Romain Grosjean, flew over the top of Narain Karthikeyan and slammed into the barriers after the Indian suffered a steering issue.

“Unfortunately the chance of points was gone after the first-lap incident with Romain, after which I had to come into the pits for a new nose," explained Rosberg, who like Karthikeyan was able to walk away from the impending Turn 16 shunt unscathed.

“Then there was the accident. Narain told me that his steering broke and he needed to brake, which I didn't expect in that high-speed corner. There was no time for me to react and I'm very thankful that we are both fine. I went to the Medical Centre for a precautionary check but everything is good."

Rosberg has now suffered three accidents in four races, none of which were his fault.

“We had a problem with the hydraulic pressure and the steering of the car went rock solid, so I had to lift my foot off the accelerator," Karthikeyan confirmed. “Unfortunately, Rosberg was coming from behind and couldn’t avoid me. It was tremendously unlucky but we have to leave it in the past and think about the United States Grand Prix."
