Zolder Circuit close to bankruptcy
The Zolder Circuit is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but there could be less to celebrate, as funds are drying up for the Belgian Circuit. WTCC, FIA GT and of course ChampCar were the last great events at the Belgian venue in recent years.
Circuit Director Thierry Deflandre has approached Taskforce Limburg, a local government organization for support in keeping the track alive. Investments in the cycling world were not enough to make profits. Also the uncertain situation within the Belgian Motorsportsworld at the beginning of 2012 contributed to this situation. They started their own national championship far too late.(The collapse of Belcar and BTCS created the Belgian Racing Car Championship).
Thierry Deflandre hopes that with government support his track can contribute to the grow of electric vehicles and motorsports. Nowadays circuits cannot survive on motorsports events alone he said.
