NBC Sports Network – the noose around IndyCar's neck

04/09/13 IndyCar at Barber Motorsports Park Sunday got a 0.27 overnight TV rating on NBC Sports Network. That compares to a 0.25 final TV rating last year.

We'll see what the final TV rating comes in at and whether it is up or down from last year.

Final ratings were 0.40 in 2010, 0.34 in 2011 and 0.25 in 2012, i.e. they have been on a downward spiral and below infomercial ratings.

1 rating point = 1% of the USA households with a TV, currently 114 million. so a 0.27 = about 300,000 households. NASCAR gets 4 to 5 million per race and note the MotoGP numbers in this news item. Of course MotoGP is a true global series and is growing, while IndyCar is inward focused domestically and, therefore, shrinking.

How do teams sell sponsorship for their cars with numbers like that?
