A paltry $1M for the near impossible to win IndyCar Triple Crown

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears, 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner Scott Dixon and IZOD IndyCar Series 500-mile race winner Ed Carpenter spoke to the media this morning about the Fuzzy's Triple Crown, which debuts this season.

Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka will be the major sponsor of the three IZOD IndyCar Series races during the 2013 season that constitute the Fuzzy's Triple Crown.

A driver who sweeps the races at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway (May 26), 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway (July 7) and 2-mile Auto Club Speedway (Oct. 19) ovals will be awarded $1 million. A driver who wins two of the three races will be awarded a $250,000 bonus.

The Fuzzy's Triple Crown renews tradition of the popular series at Indianapolis, Pocono and Ontario (Calif.) from 1971-80 and from 1981-89 at Indianapolis, Pocono and Michigan. Only four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser has won all three races in a single season, in 1978 in the Jim Hall-owned First National City Travelers Checks-sponsored car. It is a very hard feat to achieve so Fuzzy's likely won't have to ever write the $1M check. $1 million is not what it once was. The prize should be $3 million – Any driver who wins all three gets $1 million for each of the three races, $3 million in total.
