Arrests up at Indy 500

If you’ve been hoping the Indianapolis Motor Speedway would recapture some of its, er, more “colorful" charms from years past, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 weekend showed signs of promise.

Most notable: Police reported nine arrests for public indecency or public nudity.

State excise police and Speedway police also made 168 arrests for illegal possession of alcohol, public intoxication and furnishing alcohol to minors. That’s more than the 125 tickets issued last year by excise police for all infractions.

There also were 20 drug arrests: possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana or possession of paraphernalia.

And in a nod to modern trends, police made 14 arrests related to minors possessing tobacco.

Excise police did not breakdown arrests by days, but did report the majority of arrests were on Carb Day and Saturday night as fans milled outside the track.
