Van der Garde gets 5-place grid penalty
Giedo van der Garde has been given a five-place grid penalty for the next round of the season at Silverstone, with the Montreal stewards of the view that the Caterham driver failed to slow down sufficiently under blue flags during the Canadian Grand Prix.
The incident in question occurred on Lap 47, with van der Garde running into the back of Nico Hülkenberg at the final chicane. After studying the relevant footage and data, the stewards have argued that the Dutchman did not yield to the required manner.
"Car 21 [van der Garde] was given blue flags for a full lap," said the stewards. "Car 11 [Hülkenberg] had to use DRS and full KERS in order to overtake a lapped car."
Van der Garde was given a stop-go penalty during the race for a separate blue flag incident, the Dutchman colliding with Red Bull's Mark Webber at the hairpin.
