Milka Duno to race ARCA event at Winchester

East Central Indiana racing fans will get a chance to see one of the generation’s most successful female drivers this weekend when Milka Duno comes to Winchester Speedway as part of the Automobile Racing Club of America’s season circuit.

As a former Indianapolis 500 participant, Duno enters Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 race at 2 p.m. Sunday seventh in the ARCA points standings.

It is Duno’s first appearance at the half-mile track.

“I don’t know Winchester, but it doesn’t matter," Duno said. “I want to keep my points up and finish better at every race track. I just have to race as fast as I can."

Race director Keith Beeching said excitement around town has been high and the speedway has taken a lot of phone calls in anticipation of Duno’s arrival.

“Naturally we’re excited she’s here, but we’re focusing around the whole ARCA organization," Beeching said. “Winchester is a very tough race track."

The speedway doesn’t offer pre-sale tickets, but Beeching said he expects around 4,000-5,000 people at the 8,000-seat track.

No matter the numbers, Duno said her goal is to continue to prove she’s good enough to be looked at as just another driver.

“When you put the helmet on, it doesn’t matter if you’re a woman or man. The important thing is what you’re doing (behind the wheel)," Duno said.

Weekend action begins at 11:30 a.m. today with practice for the Truck Series, Racing Series and CRA Super Series. Qualifying for those races will start at 4 p.m. The Truck Series race will be at 6 and the CRA Super Series race will begin at 7. IndyStar
