IndyCars to go it alone

Sports car racing will return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2014 on NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 weekend.

What that indirectly means is that a May road course event at IMS will feature IndyCar or nothing else, as it should.

While there initially was consideration to align the new United SportsCar Racing series with the IndyCar Series for a road course extravaganza, IMS officials have long believed the focus of that event, should it happen, should be on promoting all things related to the Indianapolis 500.

In short, that’s the stars and cars of the 500, the series as whole, and the sport’s feeder system, known as the Mazda Road to Indy program.

Therefore, if the May event happens, and it will go before the company’s board of directors for consideration/approval next week, the only cars that will join the Indy cars there are those from Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000.

The most likely dates for the IndyCar road course weekend is May 8-10. The sports car race at IMS will be Friday, July 25. Indy Star

[Editor's Note: The 2nd IndyCar race at IMS should be on the oval – a 400 miler under the lights on Labor Day weekend to close out the season. It would be huge. Putting the heavy IndyCars on the Mickey Mouse Indy road course is a travesty.]
