IndyCar Series arrives in Fontana for test session open to public

Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon and other IndyCar drivers are scheduled Tuesday to hold a daylong test session in Fontana that's free to the public.

The drivers are to run practice laps from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Auto Club Speedway, where the Izod IndyCar Series' season finale, the MAVTV 500, is scheduled Oct. 19 under the lights.

The race will decide the series championship. Castroneves, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and former "Dancing with the Stars" champ in search of his first title, holds a 49-point lead over Dixon with three races left in the season. Dixon is a two-time series champion.

Other drivers expected to test Tuesday include reigning champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, this year's Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan, defending Auto Club Speedway race winner Ed Carpenter, four-time series champion Dario Franchitti, James Hinchcliffe, Marco Andretti and Camarillo native Charlie Kimball.

Spectators will be allowed to watch the test session from the Terrace Suite rooftops above pit road in the infield of the two-mile oval speedway, where the drivers reach speeds topping 200 mph.
