Todt defends double points system

FIA president Jean Todt insists that the double points system does not mark a major change in Formula 1.

The rule, which will see double points awarded at the final Grand Prix of next season, has come in for a huge amount of criticism. Former and current drivers, along with others, have slammed the idea.

However, Todt has come out in defense of the system, essentially by trying to play down its importance and pointing to other significant matters.

“A lot has been said about the new point rules but it isn’t really a big change, to be honest," the former Ferrari chief told Spanish newspaper AS.

“I believe it is far more important to talk about the reduction of costs in Formula 1. We will be saving 40% fuel because of the new engine.

“A new point system is a very small change in the rules – nothing more than that – so I really do not understand why all these people are talking so much about such a little change in the sport."
