Harvick’s car fails inspection

Kevin Harvick's second-place finish in the first Budweiser Duel qualifying race was thrown out Thursday night after his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet failed a post-race inspection.

NASCAR officials said Harvick's car exceeded the maximum split on the track bar. Instead of starting Sunday's 56th running of the Daytona 500 in fifth place, he'll now line up according to either qualifying speed or a provisional berth based on car owner points.

Harvick took the checkered flag for the first 150-mile qualifier just .022 seconds behind race winner Matt Kenseth at Daytona International Speedway. With the penalty, Kasey Kahne — third in the three-wide battle coming to the start-finish line — moves up to second place in the final order with Marcos Ambrose, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Josh Wise completing the top five.

Harvick is in his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season with the Stewart-Haas team after making the offseason move from Richard Childress Racing.
