IndyCar veteran turned Sauber F1 team affiliate driver Simona De Silvestro spoke yesterday at a Senate and Congressional Leaders Celebratory Luncheon in Washington D.C., as part of Million Women Mentors celebration of National Women's History Month.
The Swiss driver spoke to a group that included over 15 key women Senate and House leaders and business executives as they gathered to join the Million Women Mentors (MWM) campaign in the Hart Senate Building. The event saluted U.S. Senators and Representatives for their work in advancing the roles of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and career development.
De Silvestro has been an advocate for empowering women and promoting STEM education on behalf of her Clean Air Energy sponsors during the past few years while driving in the IndyCar Series.
"I want to thank AREVA, STEMConnector, and the Million Women Mentors campaign for inviting me to speak at this amazing event," De Silvestro said. "I love speaking to kids about why it's cool to be excited about science, technology, engineering and math, but to have the chance to speak with Senators and Members of Congress who are also supporting greater opportunities for young women in STEM careers was really special."
De Silvestro's Clean Air Energy campaign will continue as she transitions to Formula 1. The campaign's focus remains on community outreach, raising awareness of the importance of safe, clean, reliable and sustainable energy while supporting the growth of STEM education through activities and engagement that highlight the clean energy and sustainability platform.
"We are proud of our collaboration with Simona in raising awareness of and support for STEM education and career paths," said AREVA Inc. Chief Commercial Officer, Kim Clark. "As a proud supporter of STEMConnector and the Minorities in Energy initiative, we recognize the importance of mentoring the girls and young women who will be leading our forward-looking energy strategy for years to come."
