Pocono honored for $257.5M economic impact

Pocono Raceway was honored Monday for its impact on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. State Gov. Tom Corbett and state Senate and House leaders acknowledged the $257,500,000 economic stimulus resulting from the events held at the Raceway last year.

"I want to thank Governor Corbett and the Pennsylvania Legislature for taking steps to ensure that not only Pocono Raceway, but Pennsylvania in general, is a great place to visit," Brandon Igdalsky, Pocono Raceway President/CEO said in a release. “They are making investments in infrastructure and providing for opportunities for our facility to flourish."

Additionally, Gov. Corbett announced approval for Route 115 by the Raceway to be widened, in what the track has called a “long-term project."

Resolution

Recognizing the economic impact Pocono International Raceway has
made in northeast Pennsylvania and the entire Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, Pocono International Raceway's annual events attract
hundreds of thousands of racing fans and contribute millions of
dollars and thousands of jobs to the local economy of northeast
Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, The raceway spends millions of dollars every year on
wages, salaries, supplies, services and equipment; and

WHEREAS, The site is currently in its third generation,
making the raceway one of the few NASCAR tracks that are family-
owned and operated; and

WHEREAS, The raceway itself is a unique track, with its
triangular shape of 2.5 miles; and

WHEREAS, For 45-plus years, the raceway has hosted the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series, the Camping World Truck Series, the ARCA
Racing Series and the IndyCar Series; and

WHEREAS, The scale of its economic contribution is
noteworthy; and

WHEREAS, In 2013, Pocono International Raceway contributed
$257.5 million to the income of northeast Pennsylvania
residents, created approximately 2,752 new jobs and generated
almost $15 million in tax revenue for the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, In 2014, the raceway intends to expand the number of
facility users and sponsor new, nontraditional events, making
its potential economic impact even greater; and

WHEREAS, The forecast for 2014 estimates that Pocono
International Raceway will generate $277 million in new income
for the region and create 3,009 jobs; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
Pocono International Raceway for its economic contributions to
northeast Pennsylvania and to the entire Commonwealth.
