Jimmie Johnson would like shorter Cup schedule
NASCAR drivers often want a little more time off. Six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson apparently is one of them.
The race this weekend at Auto Club Speedway is 400 miles. It used to be 500 miles.
Prior to practice Friday, Johnson was asked his opinion about shorter races and, in a grander scheme of things, a shorter Cup schedule. The circuit currently runs 36 points races each year, plus two special events.
“It’s a great idea," Johnson said. “Maybe 25 races a year would be really good. Thirty maybe?"
The NASCAR season of 38 race weekends comes over a span of 40 weeks with just two off-weekends this year.
[Editor's Note: Psst, tell Jimmie it will NEVER happen as that would be less money in the France Family pockets.]
