Munoz says Belle Isle track is ‘really, really bumpy’

Detroit is bankrupt after having chased all the wealthy people away (i.e. the people who pay 80% of all taxes) with high taxes so will Roger Penske tap his large bank account and pay to have the Detroit track repaved every few years because it's built on unstable soil?

It’s bumpy — very bumpy, indeed.

That’s what Verizon IndyCar Series rookie Carlos Munoz said he thinks of the Raceway at Belle Isle Park.

Munoz, who drives for Andretti-HVM, was 12th-fastest in practice Friday at the 2.3-mile track at 107.593 m.p.h. in his No. 34 Dallara/Honda.

In 2012, Munoz finished second in the Indy Lights race on the island.

“The track is the bumpiest so far here … in America," said the Colombian. “For me, for the rookies in general, it took some time to get up to speed (at Belle Isle) because it’s totally different from what you are used to driving, so it took a little while to get used to the bumps to the corners."

Munoz didn’t mince words.

“It is really, really, really, really bumpy," he said. “This is really a tough track, and you are always on the limit."

Seems Munoz hasn’t driven much or at all on Detroit-area roads apart from Belle Isle.

“I have to improve for tomorrow," said Munoz of today’s IndyCar qualifying and Chevy Indy Dual 1 in Detroit.

“We are going to work all night and try and be better tomorrow. We’ll analyze everything."

Perhaps a test drive on Jefferson might be in order for Munoz before today’s IndyCar event at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. Detroit Free Press
