Medical Update on Jack Hawksworth: "Jack has been diagnosed with a myocardial contusion following the incident during the second practice session yesterday July 5th. He has not been medically cleared to compete in today’s Pocono 500 event. He currently remains under observation at Lehigh Valley Heath Network in Allentown, Pa. Jack is in good spirits and eager to return to the cockpit of the Integrity Energy Drink #98 as quickly as possible."
With no additional practice sessions the team has decided it is not feasible to run a substitute driver for today’s Pocono IndyCar 500. Work is well under way to prepare the team’s second car for next weekend’s Iowa Corn Indy 300 and Jack Hawksworth is expected to be cleared to compete for next weekend’s event.
07/06/14 INDYCAR announced that Verizon IndyCar Series driver Jack Hawksworth has been diagnosed with a myocardial contusion (a bruise of the heart muscle) suffered in an incident July 5 during the second practice session for the Pocono INDYCAR 500 fueled by Sunoco at Pocono Raceway.
Hawksworth was evaluated at the infield care center by INDYCAR medical director Dr. Michael Olinger and later transported to Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pa., where he stayed overnight for observation.
Hawksworth is not cleared to drive the No. 98 Integrity Energee Drink car for BHA/BBM with Curb-Agajanian in today's 200-lap race at Pocono Raceway. He will be re-evaluated by the INDYCAR medical team before being cleared to drive July 12 at Iowa Speedway.
Hawksworth's car spun and made left-side contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 1. He climbed from the car with assistance from the Holmatro Safety Team.
The 23-year-old first-year Verizon IndyCar Series driver from Bradford, England, was coming off a season-high third-place finish in Race 2 at Houston.
