The blind leading the blind

Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles keeps looking for ways to fill seats.

He has a full weekend of NASCAR and sports car races leading up to the Brickyard 400, and it's a failure. He's kept motorcycles on the summer schedule at Indy and added road races and vintage car races, and they are all failures. He's hired headline bands for concerts and camped inside the historic venue. But every year the challenge of keeping racing fans engaged gets a little tougher.

When IndyCar was the only series that raced at the speedway, everything was a sellout. Since Anton George brought in NASCAR, then F1, then MotoGP, and now Grand-Am/Tudor and Nationwide it's been all downhill. Simple fact is that the Indianapolis market cannot support all those race series. Simply not enough discretionary money in the bank accounts of the race fans in that market.

If they want to sell out two IndyCar races (Indy 500 and Indy 400) at the speedway every year, a few simple steps have to be taken – Kick out Sprint Cup, kick out Nationwide, kick out the Tudor sports cars and kick out MotoGP.
