Kevin Ward Sr. Speaks

"Tony Stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night. Why he had to go up as high as he did and hog my son, there’s no reason for it."

Those were the words spoken by Kevin Ward Sr. to the Syracuse Post-Standard yesterday.

In his first major interview since the tragedy that took the life of his son, Ward Sr. said his son had never gotten out of his car after an incident before, but said he understood why he did it.

“I think the reason he probably got out of that car is who put him into the wall. He was definitely put into the wall," said Ward Sr.

Ward was not actually watching when the incident occurred, as he said he was driving his ATV to the paddock area to prepare for the wrecked car.

Officials stopped him and would not let him back to the track.

“I knew it was pretty serious. The officials still weren’t letting us on the track," he said.

Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that the accident will be under investigation for at least two more weeks.
