Both Target and DHL had hundreds of corporate sponsors at the GoPro Sonoma Grand Prix Sunday. While the Target folks and DHL folks went home happy with Dixon winning in a Target car and Hunter-Reay finishing 2nd in a DHL car, they are not stupid. They had to peer out over the grandstands and see them all near empty and think to themselves, this series is dying.
With IndyCar losing the youth of America and with no clue how to get them back, the series continues to see declining attendance. The Obama Administration says unemployment is dropping (the real unemployment rate is at record highs but they keep that quiet) so what's the excuse?
On television it looked even worse, the overhead shots showing vast grandstands void of people, and others maybe 2% or 3% full.
