IndyCar drivers paying tribute to Wheldon in charity race

IndyCar drivers will gather in New Castle, Indiana this weekend to remember Dan Wheldon.

The second annual Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge will be held Saturday at the New Castle Motorsports Park. Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, was killed in a crash during a race in Las Vegas nearly three years ago.

The go-kart race will help raise money for the Alzheimer's Association.

"It was an important thing for him to build awareness around it, because his mother was diagnosed," said Wheldon's widow, Susie. "Unfortunately, she lost her battle with it in April. It was just really important for me to carry on that work that he was doing. It was an important part of his legacy I want to continue as long as I can and eventually share that with our children."

Gates open Saturday at 7 a.m. with the green flag dropping at 12:30.
