Alex Lynn in contention to succeed Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso

Alex Lynn has emerged as a strong contender to replace Red Bull-bound Daniil Kvyat and partner Max Verstappen at Toro Rosso in 2015.

The 21-year-old joined the Red Bull junior team this year after boldly emailing Dr Helmut Marko ahead of the 2013 Macau GP and telling the Austrian that he would win the prestigious F3 and wanted to be part of the driver program.

Lynn is on the verge of the GP3 title and feels he is ready to follow in the footsteps of 2013 champion Kvyat and bypass GP2 straight into F1.

"I hope so, I hope I am doing enough to impress my bosses, Dr Marko over in the other paddock. I hope he is watching and seeing that I am doing a good job," he told Sky Sports F1.

"I know that winning the championship is going to do me a lot of good and if I can wrap it up this weekend [in Russia] all the better."

The Briton is certainly under consideration for the Toro Rosso vacancy after being named on a shortlist by Team Principal Franz Tost as the Austrian made clear that the driver widely considered the favorite for the seat, Carlos Sainz, was not their only option.

"There are also other drivers," Tost said in the FIA Press Conference.

"We have Jean-Eric Vergne, which is an experienced driver, we have Carlos Sainz Jr which is currently leading the 3.5-litre Renault championship, then we have Pierre Gasly, we have Lynn.

"Fortunately Red Bull has a lot of very fast, highly-skilled drivers in the driver pool and within the next weeks, Red Bull will decide who will get this seat."
Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle feels there is no reason Lynn shouldn't get the Toro Rosso seat: "I hope so. He's got as good a chance as anyone in the Red Bull train coming along."

GP2 could also crown a British champion this weekend in the shape of Jolyon Palmer, who has publically admitted he is targeting an F1 seat in 2015, so could we see two more Britons on the grid?

"I think there's at least a 50/50 chance Jolyon will be in a Formula 1 seat next year," Brundle added.

"If anyone can do it, Jolyon and his dad Jonathan will somehow make it happen. Jolyon has earned the right to go in a Formula 1 car in races." Sky Sports
