Labonte to retire after tomorrow’s race

Terry Labonte will retire after tomorrow's Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The Corpus Christi, Texas native made his first NASCAR Sprint Cup start at Darlington in 1978. He would go on to win 22 races, 27 poles and the 1984 and 1996 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championships. Labonte also won the 1989 IROC Championship.

Since 2005, the 57-year-old has run the Sprint Cup Series on a part-time basis. Tomorrow's race will be his fourth of 2014, and 890th of a career, which has spanned 37 seasons. Labonte will start ninth in the #32 C&J Energy Services Ford.
